The annual Weatherhead Open kicked off on Friday 9th June with this year’s edition having a school’s tourney being played at Kyadondo other than at the Lugogo National hockey stadium as it has usually been.
The school’s category featured 3 teams on the females side(Kakungulu Memorial, Thunderbirds and Kyadondo girls) and 4 teams on the boys side (Kakungulu Memorial, Kyadondo A,Kyadondo B and Ntare)
Kakungulu Memorial had won the past edition in both girls and boys categories and appeared to be in fine position to defend their trophies picking up vital wins in their first fixtures against Thunderbirds and Kyadondo A respectively.
The Kakungulu boys faced rather an uphil task of adopting quickly to the natural ground surface as most of their players that have been playing for clubs in the natipnal league have seemingly grwon fond to the turf at the Lugogo stadium.
This was evident in the recent USSA national hockey games where Ntare School emerged victors edging off Kakungulu in the finals.
The 2023 USSA hockey champions,Ntare School braved the journey from Mbarara to Kampala in bid to secure another silverware and foster their preparations for the East African School games happening in Rwanda from 17th August.
The tournament kicked off with both categories(girls and boys) playing in a round robin format whereby the leaders of the group stage and 1st runners up would book slots for a final play off.
Kyadondo girls faced Kakungulu in the girls final and the latter easily emerged victors with a 4-0 win to defend their trophy.
Kakungulu boys as well who also finished in top spot faced Kyadondo B in the finals.Kyadondo B had earlier displayed a great show against Ntare winning the game 1-0 boosting their hopes in having a chance at upsetting Kakungulu boys in addition to having home advantage. The game ended in a one all draw and headed for shootouts where Kyadondo B emerged victors (4-2)
The Weatherhead Open continues today wih clubs category in action at the Lugogo National Hockey grounds.
