The 2023 Weatherhead Open that was kicked off with the school’s category, happening on the 9th of June continued to span over the weekend with the clubs categories in action on 10th and 11th at the Lugogo hockey grounds. The event turned out successful filled with games of intensity plus a test of fitness and endurance under the bright sunshine over the weekend that was.

Having established champions for the school’s category(Kakungulu Memorial School and Kyadondo B for the girls and boys discplines respectively) , 13 clubs had to battle it out for the remaining silverware at stake with 9 men’s teams and 4 female teams facing it out at the National hockey stadium.

The Open came to a climax on Sunday with the Weatherhead Gazelles turning up to the occasion,topping the group standings after playing out a round robin with 3 other clubs. Sc Wananchi came in second to book a date with the Gazelles in the final.

Anita Atim’s brace wasn’t enough for the Gazelles in the final as they were edged off by SC Wananchi 3-2 to be crowned as the Weatherhead Open champions in the ladies category.

On the men’s side of things, arguably the two strongest clubs in the land at the moment( SC Wananchi and Weatherhead Men) topped their groups to tussle it out with City Lions and Eldoret Youths respectively.

SC Wananchi easily saw off a stubborn City Lions side as Weatherhead edged off Eldoret Youths with a lone goal from Thomas Opio to send them to finals in a mouth watering clash for the many fans that turned up at the Lugogo hockey grounds.

The Weatherhead men battled it out with SC Wananchi in the final game of the evening with the hosts eager to defend their trophy.

As Napoleon famously said, “whoever possess Constantinople ought to rule the world” , Wetherhead weren’t yet champions of the Open but Colline Batusa’s antics in the heart of midfield with his long range passes and dribbles proved to be lethal and a threat to Wananchi’s prowessness on the sand based turf of Lugogo.

The game ended in a one all draw and the Weatherhead men went ahead to defend the Open trophy following heroics of their keeper Charles Ekapolon in the shootouts.

The teams will now switch their focus onto the league as the Uganda Baati Hockey League resumes on Saturday 17th June,2023 at the Lugogo Hockey Grounds.
