Kampala Hockey Club Ladies (Swans) and Weatherhead Men ended the first round of the 2023 Uganda Baati Hockey League season on a bright note, posting victories in their respective outings on Saturday and Sunday respectively.
The Swans entered the Gameweek at the top of the log of the women’s table standings tied on points with Weatherhead Gazelles, 16 a piece but with a game less played and superior goal difference.

The Kampala Hockey club side ensured they maintained their grip at the helm of the table with a convincing 12-0 win against Thunders, thanks to goals from Franziska Messenbrink(1),Angela Nakintu(2) Sandra Namusoke (2) and sisters Lucky Akello and Alaro Winnie scooping 3 and 4 goals respectively as it rained goals in the chilly afternoon at the Lugogo National Hockey stadium.
In the men’s pool, Weatherhead came toe to toe with Kampala Hockey Club Stallions in bid to maintain their fine form and carry on with their unbeaten run plus keep the top spot in the league standings. The latter were lacking the services of their talisman Musoke Dulf and Joseph Bbosa in a game they’d have loved to use to turn around fortunes for their side in the season having dropped some points against teams like City Lions,Rockets and Wananchi to leave them in the 4th position with 16 points prior to their matchup with the high flying Wetherhead that was fresh from being crowned Weatherhead open champions.
Ernest Musumba tapped in from close range to put Stallions ahead within the 1st quarter of the game. The Stallions held on to the lead thanks to great saves from Richard Kaijuka and defensive prowessness from Richard Ssemwogerere who patnered well in the back with James Mugisha.
The Stallions looked as if they’d hold on to the slim lead and walk away with the win but the Weatherhead side had other plans managing to secure three goals in a space of 6 minutes in the final quarter of the game thanks to goals from Thomas Opio,Collije Batusa and Maxwell Mugisa.

In other games over the weekend, Kwagala Jjuuko’s strike in the 55th minute of play handed Weatherhead Titans their first win of the season condemning the Badgers’ side to a bitter loss having missed several chances early in the game. The goal came in after Vincent Kasasa’s beautiful chip cancelled out Emma Mukama’s opener for Badgers.
HC Badgers face off against City Lions as the only game left to conclude the first round fixtures.
