Team Makerere won big at the recently concluded 3×3 Championship in Johannesburg, South Africa where they finished 3rd and managed to bag the Bronze medal after defeating South Africa’s North-west University in the third place playoff.

The team was represented by Thelma Toskin Delane from the JKL Lady Dolphins, Martha Oluka (Angels), Denise Tekitendwa (Miracle Ravens) and Generous Grant (JKL Lady Dolphins).

The ladies lost their first game 12:13 against University of Ghana but they managed to shrug off the tiredness and went to work in the next games. They easily won their second group game against Zambia’s Levy Mwanawasa Medical University21:12 and rounded the group games with a dominant win against University of Botswana finishing 20:8.

The ladies carried this new found confidence into the quarter finals the following day and made easy work of South Africa’s University of Johannesburg, who were also the hosts with a 20:8 victory. UJ had only won 1 of their first 3 fixtures, coming against North West University.

The ladies then took on American University in Cairo (AUC) who had yet to lose a game. They had won their group games easily and knocked out University of Botswana with a dominant display 21:06. Despite the spirited fight from Makerere, the Egypt showed their superiority and managed to win the game 17:12. The AUC side went on to become eventual winners of the competition.

The Makerere Ladies who were the expected winners sailed smoothly past South Africa’s North-West University with a 17:05 victory and managed to secure the Bronze medal for the second time in a row.

Team Uganda Men was represented by Ndejje University who won 4 of their 6 games but were eliminated in the quarter finals. They opened 4 back to back wins, 14:03, 9:17, 21:05, 12:22 against Cape Breton University Comets, North-West University, University of Botswana and University of Ghana respectively.

Their first loss was 14:21 when they were up against Ghana’s University of Cape Coast, who were eventual overall winners and the final stroke for them was a 21:15 loss against United States International University in Africa (USIU).
