On Monday, 9 youngsters were flagged at NCS to represent Uganda in the World Schools Team Championship 2023 in Aktau, Kazakhstan that will happen from 3rd to 8th August.

The team includes 5 girls from Peak Primary School and 4 boys from Friends International School.

The teams qualified after emerging victorious in the Father Grimes Chess Tournament, that is participated in by both Primary and Secondary schools back in

Since being informed about their qualification, the team has been in intense training both online and physical sessions. A number of better players and stronger opponents have been invited to give players tricks and tactics.

They have also had a couple of Friendlies with Gombe S.S and KTLC chess club in addition to competing in the National Chess League.

The Squad includes 8 year old, Primary 3 pupil, Chanelle Iculet whose journey in chess is a fascinating one and she’s the youngest on the contingent.

She first saw her brother playing chess and in January when he went to represent Uganda in Mombasa, she felt sad as she wasn’t taken to the trip.

She then decided to join a Chess club at Peak Primary school and when the school went to compete in Father Grimes tournament, she went as a substitute.

When the team won, she also qualified. She has since won a couple of tournaments and has been undergoing intense training.

The tournament will see over 50 teams, from over 20 countries around the world. The event will also see 3 other African countries like Nigeria, Botswana, Madagascar.
