Kampala Hockey Club, representing Uganda, recently traveled to Blantyre, Malawi to participate in the 34th Edition of the Men’s Africa Cup for Club Champions. The tournament took place from 18th to 26th November and featured teams from various nations including Malawi, Kenya, Egypt, and others. Despite being considered underdogs, Kampala Hockey Club displayed a commendable performance throughout the competition.
The tournament employed a round-robin, one-legged tie format, with seven teams vying for glory. Kampala Hockey Club faced tough opponents such as Sharkia from Egypt, Western Jaguars from Kenya, and Genetrix, Parachute Battalion, and Scorpions from Malawi, as well as Police Machine from Nigeria.
Over the course of six games, Kampala Hockey Club demonstrated their skill and determination, securing 12 points with four wins and two losses. This outstanding performance placed them in the third position overall. Their success meant they would face Genetrix of Malawi in the bronze medal game, as Genetrix had finished fourth in the competition.

Genetrix had previously proven themselves as a strong team, managing to achieve a draw against Western Jaguars of Kenya, a formidable opponent. In contrast, Kampala Hockey Club had suffered a loss against the Kenyan team. Hence the stage being set for an intense battle in the bronze medal game despite KHC having emerged 2-1 victors in the earlier kick off in the round robin stage.

Both teams were eager to secure a medal in the tournament. Genetrix, being the only Malawian side in the medal bracket, carried the hopes of their nation for a podium finish on home soil. Kampala Hockey Club, on the other hand, aimed to make history as the first Ugandan club to finish in the top three at the Africa Cup for Club Champions stage.
In an intense showdown, Kampala Hockey Club displayed their resilience and determination. Despite initially trailing by a goal, they managed to turn the game around and secure a convincing 3-1 victory. Thanks to goals from Bayuule Brian (2) and Malit (1), Kampala Hockey Club emerged victorious and claimed the bronze medal.

The bronze medal triumph not only adds a significant accolade to Kampala Hockey Club’s achievements but also highlights their resilience and determination on the continental hockey scene. Congratulations to Kampala Hockey Club on this historic accomplishment!
