Uganda Martyrs University (UMU) Rugby 7s team came with one mission to the AUUS Games, to defeat Victoria University and take home Gold, since Victoria were expected to be their toughest test.
Despite not defeating Victoria on the field as the game ended in a stalemate, they managed to dethrone them as the champions of University Rugby 7s after having conceded less points during the games.
It was a dramatic 3rd round after UMU draw 7:7 against Uganda Christian University (UCU) and shortly after that, Kyambogo University almost shocked Victoria University, the game ending 12 a piece.

The final game was between the two sides and it was a winner takes it all situation. UMU knew that they had the perfect opportunity to get a much needed revenge against Victoria University, after having failed to defeat them even once during the Varsity 7s earlier in the year.
Things didn’t get off to the best start for them as Victoria got the first try of the game about 4 minutes into the game. While UMU was on the attack deep into the Victoria territory, there was a tackle and the ball was open. Calvin Gizamba was very fortunate to kick it and it bounced just in the right direction and he went through to get the first try of the game.

In the second half, UMU got themselves a quick try after thoroughly well executed scrumdown. They ball found the hands of Kevin Barasa who found the defense napping and he cut through it with such ease.
Victoria were not hard done by this as they got a quick response, Daniel Ebau touching down for their second try after Daniel Kateregga had done all the hard work, dancing through the defense and then a perfect offload.

The game became even sweeter, UMU knew that time was running out and they had to act fast. On the restart, they managed to get the possession calmly, made one set up and went through.
Arthur Opio offloaded to his twin brother Arnold Ocen on the wing and the rest is history. He managed to round the first defender Joseph Kana and then left the flying Calvin Gizamba grazing.
The game ended in a stalemate, and the fact that UMU had conceded 19 points less, they ended up as the champions.
These two sides are some of the best in University Rugby and lools like a Rivalry has been birthed.
