The 2024 National Basketball League (NBL) is set to tip off on 26th January with 4 fixtures on the opening day.
The 2023 Division 1 Finalists for both the men and the women shall be going head to head while a repeat of the 2023 NBL semifinals shall also be going down.
The newbies, Livingstone against JT Jaguars shall be one of the big games as the both teams have a chance to have a winning start to the campaign.
Rumors have it that the JT Jaguars have made serious changes to their roster and whispers in the corridors point to Saidi Amisi “Camelo” joining them.
After going with 100% record last season, the UPDF Ladyhawks will hope to start the season with a victory and they shall take on the YMCA Lady Hamstars whom they swept in the finals.
The Ladyhawks have also added a few pieces to their roster to help them become better since the NBL is a far much competitive league.
The biggest game on the opening day shall be 2023 finalists, KIU Titans vs 2022 finalists, Namuwongo Blazers. Both teams are looked at as contenders and with them clashing in the opener, both teams shall be sizing each other up to see who is better.
The Blazers pulled out of the playoffs in 2023 and many fans argue that given all the time they have had to rest and the new additions to their team, they should be having the edge and have to get it done this season.
The KIU Titans are rumored to be having problems retaining players and most notably, Joseph Chuma has already crossed to the Nam Blazers and Amisi’s future ‘apparently’ hanging in balance.
Reports say, they acquired services of two Congolese players but the club is yet to make a statement/announcement.
Whatever the case, the opener against the Nam Blazers shall be a very good game for both teams to see where they each stand.
A repeat of the semifinals between KIU Rangers and JT Lady Jaguars shall also be on the menu on opening night.
Reports indicate that the Lady Jaguars have parted ways with about 10 players including Zainah Lokwameri (11.5 PPG, 6.5 RPG, 4M4 APG) and Muhaimuna Namuwaya but the only confirmed exit so far is of former USPA player of the year Moreen Amoding (10.8 PPG, 2.8 RPG, 2.4 APG, 1 SPG).
Not much has been had from the KIU Rangers camp but word on the street has it that Perus Nyamwenge, who was part of the All Star season team, is on the verge of departure to the KCCA Leopards.
