The Uganda Baati National Hockey League 2023 season is coming to an exciting end, with the final matches set to be played over the weekend of January 20th and 21st, 2024 at the Lugogo Hockey grounds. The battleground is set, and fans are in for a spectacle as teams vie for glory and players compete for top honors.

The KHC Swans have dominated the women’s standings, with one hand already on the trophy, securing the title with an unbeaten run, showcasing exceptional skills led by top scorer Lucky Akello (23 goals) and the dynamic sister partnership of Winnie Alaro and mid-season signing Norah Alum.

A standout in their epic season is midfielder Sanne Swinkels, a formidable force. Their second-to-last fixture, a 5-0 victory over DCU, propelled them to 35 points, comfortably leading by three points over Gazelles. The Swans’ last game against Makerere is set to conclude their remarkable campaign on a high note, leaving no doubt they’ll be crowned the new champions.

In the Men’s league, a nail-biting battle unfolds as Weatherhead and Wananchi find themselves locked in a points tie at 47, both unbeaten after 17 exhilarating games. Weatherhead, however, holds the edge with a superior goal difference of 121 against Wananchi’s 111. The spotlight intensifies on Weatherhead as they face off against the formidable KHC Stallions, while Wananchi engages in a seemingly fair matchup against the Rockets.

Richard Ssemwogerere of KHC Stallions tussles it out with Weatherhead opponents in a recent encounter.

The burning question looms: Can Wananchi muster the goals to surpass Weatherhead, or will KHC Stallions wreak havoc on Weatherhead’s winning streak?

Adding to the weekend drama is a crucial clash between KHC Originals and Weatherhead Titans, a battle at the bottom of the table. With Originals languishing in 10th place with 6 points and Titans at 9th with 8 points, a win for KHC Originals could propel them off the bottom, shaping the final standings.

Beyond the podium battles, individual accolades come into play, with the race for the top scorer in the Men’s league providing an extra layer of excitement.

Jordan Acaye of Wananchi and Thomas Opio of Weatherhead find themselves tied at an impressive 32 goals each, closely pursued by the in-form Colline Batusa of Weatherhead at 30 goals. The spotlight is on Jordan Acaye as he faces Rockets, making him the favorite in this thrilling race.

The Lugogo Hockey grounds are set to witness intense battles, nail-biting moments, and joyous celebrations. Who will emerge victorious? Only time will tell!
