The Makerere Impis registered their first victory of the season against the Lifeguard Rams, in a game that would be described as a full course meal.

Last play of the game and the Lifeguard Rams win a penalty, a conversion would give them a one (1) point victory, completing the turn around.

Hosana Opileni, who had scored from a similar position, on the other side of the pitch, had all the weight of the team on his shoulders as he was going to be the game decider.

He steps up, takes the kick and for a moment, the entire crowd watching the game was quiet, awaiting to see the trajectory of the ball.

Good height on the ball and it looks like it’s between the poles, but something unexpected happens. The ball his the poles and unluckily goes out.

No impis player was close enough and to secure the ball and the Rams came charging in with all the gas left in the tank. Fortunately for Impis, a player ran and put a boot to the ball, putting it into touch and the referee Rosenberg finished the game.

How did we get here?

Impis led the game 9:0 at half time, all points coming from penalty kicks.

Rams had a couple of their own attempts but were unfortunate not to put up points on the scoreboard.

In the second half, Rams got a penalty off the restart after a knock on was made and the offside player collected the ball. Obbo made no mistake, kicking the ball straight through the ball and this set the tone for the rest of the game.

Seven (7) minutes after that penalty, the Rams got another one in a sweet spot and Obbo made no mistake making it a 3 point game.

Impis managed to come down on the Rams pressure and make some attacks of their own.

They pressed the Rams for about five (5) deep in their territory, managed to force them into an error and Isabirye was given the yellow card, giving Impis a 1 man advantage for the next ten (10) minutes.

The Impis, who had been very dominant on the scrum opted for it but the Rams leveled up to it and forced Impis to swing it.

Benjamin Mukisa saw the overlap in a 3 against 1 situation and opted for a well measured cross kick, but Jino Diciri was unable to secure the ball after a bounce that sent it away from him.

The Rams managed to get themselves back in the game after that, Hosana Opileni scoring from 45 meters, in the 60th minute to tie the game ad then giving the Rams the lead shortly after that with another penalty in the 65th.

Most Impis fans had lost hope, after Rams took the lead but Pius Mpoza still had a trick under his sleeve which would save Impis’ day.

After a line-out, the Rams players were trying to form a maul but Mpoza saw a very tiny opening, went through and offloaded to Tamale John Mary who scored that try that gave them the a 14:12 victory to start the campaign
