The KCCA Leopards faced their “biggest” challenge of the season so far when they took on the KIU Rangers who had been unbeaten.

Despite the lack of their star duo, Perus Nyamwenge (travels) and Moreen Amoding (injury) Leopards made very light work of the Rangers, dominating them from the get go and winning 60:44.

Leanne Nalunkuma showed that she’s still got that knocking down 3/6 from beyond the arc. Uwineza Ninette also had her moments scoring 2/3 from the 3-point line. With the absence of perennial shooters Moreen Amoding and Perus Nyamwenge, the Leopards had a couple of people step up to fill their shoes and they executed the role perfectly.

The Leopards have the biggest (size and height) players in the league. The Leopards bigs, Martha Soigi, Susan Rebecca Aanyu, Falidah Kadondi and Asinah Kabendela have a lot of strength, physical build and wingspan.

Their guards are also bigger than the most guards in the league, Kazibwe Sylvester, Leanne Nalunkuma and Ruth Atuheire are physically gifted and this gives them a slight advantage.

Martha Soigi has mastered the Mid-range jumper, she is very lethal from around the free throw line and this makes her a dangerous weapon.

Susan Aanyu has had ambitions of joining the Gazelles team and when you see her play, she has a lot of passion and output. There’s a lot of hunger, desire and drive  for her to win a championship and she can lead her side to the promised land, if she’s able to execute her roles perfectly.

The other avenue that the Leopards can use to hurt opponents is the fast break. Their defense has been very sound in the first 5 games of the season and as a result, they have forced very many turnovers leading to fast breaks.

Perus Nyamwenge of the KCCA Leopards

Perus Nyamwenge and new acquisition Margaret Bagaala have got speed, composure and skills to easily finish on the fast breaks. These 2 can be rotated or played together depending on the defense and they can thrive off of each other.

The team can also be lethal and this was seen when they played the A1 Challenge, Nabisunsa and UCU Lady Canons. They have used every opportunity to ram down defenders and teams when they are dominating.

The only other team which is still unbeaten is the defending champions JKL Dolphins who are still looked at as the favorites.

The Lady Dolphins have the reigning MVP, Hope Akello in their team and in any game she can easily be the difference.

Becky Longom is the other big piece to the Lady Dolphins and she showed us what she can do in the Finals last year when she averaged 17 rebounds per game. Her presence makes the Lady Dolphins solid defensively and her offense is a bonus.

The Lady Dolphins also have a couple of seasoned players Flavia Oketcho, Ritah Imanishimwe, Evelyne Nakiyinji and more who have played together for a while and have team chemistry.

As things start, these are looked at as the contenders and rightly so, they are yet to lose a game this season. Acquisitions for both teams during the mid-season transfer shall be very important as 1 or 2 piece can make them better or even other teams better.

The 2 sides are expected to meet on 15th March and whether they will both still be unbeaten, only time will tell.
