The 2nd edition of the Pearl of Africa Women’s Cup (club’s category) commenced on Saturday, March 9th, 2024, following the showcase of young talent in the schools category the previous day.

Five clubs participated in the event: SC Wananchi, HDF, Mombasa HC, Kampala Hockey Club, and Deliverance Church. The competition was structured as a group stage with a round-robin format, where the top two teams would advance to the final.

Wananchi started strong with a convincing victory over HDF, while KHC initially led but later settled for a 2-2 draw against Mombasa, who had traveled from Kenya to participate in the tournament.

As the matches unfolded, KHC recovered and secured two wins and a draw, earning their place in the final. Meanwhile, Wananchi, with 7 points from two wins and a draw, needed at least a draw against Mombasa to advance to the final alongside KHC.

Mombasa took an early lead with a penalty corner goal by Esther Mwikali, seeming likely to face KHC in the final as they needed a win. However, a controversial moment arose when a Mombasa player touched the ball inside the D in the dying minutes of the game, leading to a penalty stroke awarded to Wananchi. After Doreen Mbabazi converted the penalty stroke, the match ended in a 1-1 draw, ensuring Wananchi’s place in the final against KHC.

In the final showdown, KHC’s captain, Abeja Vanessa, scored early in the game as they aimed to defend their previous title. Wananchi responded strongly, with Doreen Mbabazi scoring twice in the 16th and 20th minutes, securing a 2-1 victory and clinching the championship title.
