On Sunday, January 12th, 2025, the Fast Fusion Indoor Arena transformed into a vibrant hub of camaraderie and competition during the Ubuntu Cup Season 2.
Organized by Hockey Club Badgers, the tournament was not merely about winning—it was a testament to the profound philosophy of Ubuntu, encapsulated in the theme “Ubuntu/Umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu” (I am because you are). The event was a grand success, uniting over 100 hockey enthusiasts.
The tournament featured 12 spirited teams, each representing cities from various countries, divided into two groups. Group A included Benghazi, Cairo, Harare, Jinja, Monrovia, and Pretoria, while Group B comprised Conakry, Accra, Maputo, Freetown, Brazzaville, and Ouagadougou.
The format required each team to field at least two women and no more than three men during play.
The teams battled it out in a one-legged round-robin format within their groups. The top two teams from each group advanced to the semifinals.
Group A saw Benghazi dominate with 11 points, followed by Cairo at 10 points, who edged out Harare on goal difference. Group B was dominated by Conakry with a commanding 13 points, with Accra coming in second with 9 points.
In the semifinals, Benghazi triumphed over Accra, while Conakry edged out Cairo in thrilling encounters, setting the stage for an exciting final between Benghazi and Conakry. The final match was nothing short of spectacular, with Conakry clinching a 3-2 victory, thanks to a decisive goal by Henry Kasule.

The event concluded with a celebration of individual and team achievements
- Champions: Conakry – A stellar squad featuring Jordan Mpiima, Okello Elias, Tugaine Anselm, Henry Kasule, Caromatic, Risen, Thuwaibah Kiggundu, and Jemimah Arayo.
- Most Valuable Player (Ladies): Nakato Janet (Benghazi).
- Most Valuable Player (Men): Sula Bwabye (Benghazi).
- Top Scorer (Ladies): Ninsiima Pauline (Jinja) with 5 goals.
- Top Scorer (Men): Jackson Musinguzi (Benghazi) with an impressive 9 goals.
Thanks to the meticulous organization by Hockey Club Badgers, the tournament was a resounding success. Participants and spectators alike enjoyed a day filled with smiles, sportsmanship, and the celebration of Ubuntu.
It was a perfect prelude to the upcoming season, leaving everyone refreshed and looking forward to more moments of unity and excitement on the hockey field.
The Ubuntu Cup Season 2 truly embodied the spirit of “I am because you are,” reminding us all of the strength that comes from community and mutual respect.
