The inaugural Western Basketball Club Championship went down on 1st and 2nd March at St Joseph’s Vocation School (JOVOC) in Mbarara and it was a success.
14 teams participated from Kampala, Tooro, Kigezi and Mbarara and it attracted over 200 players and officials.
It was disappointing to see just 2 ladies’ teams (JKL Lady Dolphins and UPDF Lady Tomahawks) participate but nonetheless, they competed ferociously and gave the fans something beautiful to watch.
JKL won both games, 76-45 in the first game and 43-24 in the second.

Tamasha Nsubuga was named the MVP and for the first time, we saw Angellah Zainah Lokwameri back in a JKL Lady Dolphins uniform.
For the men, 12 teams participated but the games between Fort Portal and UPDF Tomahawks were the biggest highlights.
The 2 sides met in the group stages and Fort Portal managed to clinch a 49-45 victory in overtime.
The sides met once again in the final and it seemed like a one-sided affair as Fort Portal led by as many as 20 but UPDF cut the deficit to just 5 with less than 2 minutes left.

It was very tense in the final minutes but Fort Portal managed to see out the game and registered a 52-47 win.
The organizers, Beyond Basketball, acknowledge that the numbers were not as expected but promised to make the next edition bigger and better.
On 8th and 9th March, the same venue shall host the JOVOC open, which is for schools alone, and it is expected to have over 30 schools turn up.
