The Gazelles’ captain Jane Asinde was named in the team of the tournament at the 2025 FIBA Women’s Afrobasket in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire.

Jane, who was also the MVP at the Zone V Qualifiers in Egypt back in February led by example and it didn’t surprise many when she was named in the team of the tournament.

She had amazing statistics and despite Uganda not finishing where they wanted, Jane Asinde showed that the Pearl of Africa has talent, given her performances.

In the opening game against Guinea, Jane registered 15 points, 5 rebounds, and 7 assists in 25 minutes as Uganda won 88-51.

Against Senegal, Jane registered a double-double. 18 points, 11 rebounds, 7 assists, 2 steals and 1 block.

Once again, she had a double-double, 15 points, 11 rebounds, 6 assists, 1 steal and 2 blocks as the Gazelles fell to South Sudan 68-69 in the quarter-finals.

Her lowest performance came against Mozambique, 7 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists, 1 steal, 1 block in Uganda’s 76-58 defeat.

Crunching the numbers

Jane registered 3 doubles in 5 games at the tournament and this was the highest by a player.

She averaged 15.8 points per game which was 6th and had a total of 79 points which was fourth.

The players above her played 1 more game than her and hadn’t this been the case, perhaps she would have been the top scorer.

Jane registered 8.8 rebounds, the fourth most in the tournament.

Additionally, she had 5.2 assists which was second in the overall standings.

Jane drew the most fouls and attempted the most free throws, 46, scoring 35 of them.

With her performance, Asinde inspired many young girls.

Just like Jannon Otto in the 2023 edition, the Gazelles have had another player in the team of the tournament and who knows, maybe in the next edition, another player shall make their make on the continent.
