Playing at the commonwealth games is one of the most prestigious honors that an athlete can have in their career. The experience is comparable to playing at the Olympics and the World cup.

The 2026 games will be happening in Glasgow, Scotland from 23rd July to 2nd August but there is good news for Uganda already.

The 3×3 Women’s team earned their qualification and will be among the 12 teams (women) fighting to win the title.

Uganda qualified by virtue of being the number one ranked team in Africa by 1st December, 2025.

The 3×3 Gazelles earned most of their points from the FIBA 3×3 Youth Nations League, the U23 World Cup and the 3×3 Women’s series.

For the men, they narrowly missed out on qualification.

By 1st December, Nigeria had been ahead of them whereas at the moment, Uganda is ahead of them.

What does this mean for Uganda?

First and foremost, the athletes will get to compete against some of the best players in the world as they prepare for other tournaments.

Secondly, performing well would improve Uganda’s rankings as they seek for qualification for the 2028 Olympics is Los Angeles.

2026 and 2027 will be very historic years for Uganda in the women’s 3×3 and playing at the Commonwealth games will be one of those unforgettable experiences for the players.
