In almost every season that they have been in the NBL, Nabisunsa has been one of the underdogs. Despite producing multiple stars, the team is stuck in a vicious cycle where there top talents leave at the age when the team should start reaping. As thus, they have always ‘struggled’.

In 2024, they narrowly survived relegation and this was because YMCA had given a walkover in their opening game of the season against UPDF.

In 2025, A1 Challenge was withdrawn from the league and thus only one team had to get relegated. Nabisunsa was better than Nkumba and Angels and thus managed to stay afloat.

In 2026 however, there could be something exciting at the team. There is a huge possibility that Nabisunsa may not be fighting for their lives but rather a spot in the playoffs.

You may wonder, what has changed?

Well, in recent history, Nabisunsa has usually had one ‘star’ player on the team and those cannot carry the team. This time around, they have a quartet of stars and these may carry them to the playoffs.

The Stars

2025 Regular Season MVP, Mpoza Abigail is still on this roster. Abigail’s game has matured and she is now a leader on this team. She can easily get you 20 points in a game and the most important thing is that she is very efficient. Mpoza also relates well with her teammates and they trust her. She’s an asset.

Joy Auma was among the top 10 most productive players in the 2025 season. Despite her name not being known, she is a force. An athletic player that can be used in various formations and positions. In 2025, she primarily played as a 5 and fought to secure rebounds for the team. This is a player with a big heart and is willing to improve. She is also a leader in this team and usually galvanizes the troops.

One person who has been very under the radar is Martha Yikiru. Not the biggest or tallest but when you check the stats, she averages almost a double –double.

This is another player with a fighting spirit and to make it better, she is very efficient from the field. Also, she was recently named the Captain and with this new responsibility, more is expected of her.

There is no doubt that she will perform and will continue bagging double-doubles.

The last of the quartet is Abifaith Musiimenta who was named the co-captain to Martha. She has played in the NBL for 3 seasons and has gained a lot of experience. Musiimenta is expected to be the starting point guard of this team and help steer the ship forward. Abifaith is calm and that is largely down to the fact that she is no stranger to the NBL.

On top of these four, Nabisunsa has other players that could cause problems to opponents.

Martha Ankunda played her first season in 2025 and things didn’t go well for her. However, she has very good height and that can be a weapon. In that season, Nabisunsa did not have very tall girls and they had to throw her in the deep end despite not being ready.

This time around, she has got some experience as this stage and won’t be frightened. Secondly, she has been working out with Coach Albert and if her confidence and ability to rebound the ball are increased, she will be a very good asset.

The other player is Agaba Sharifah who could be the backup point guard. She has played for 2 seasons in the NBL and is a very confident player.  Sharifah will be one that can help this team in some occasions.

Most of the players on the team have NBL experience. Passioanate Nakalembe, 3 seasons, Josephine Akiteng, Namalwa Esther and Jesca Amella all have 2 seasons under their belt while Alenxandra Namyalo has one.

There is a very exciting new player, Kisakye Melissa, who was previously at Iganga Girls. Melissa is special and she will make a name for herself. When you see her play, there is no doubt that she will be a star in the future.

2026 is a year where Nabisunsa can elevate from surviving relegation to making the playoffs. The team has all they need in terms of personnel and all that is left is to increase confidence in the girls and let them know that they can do it.
