Makerere Sparks thumped Amazon Rhino 71-31 to register 40-point victory for the first time in eons. On the opening day of the season, they came close to a 40-point game after defeating the Lady Icons 71-32, but were unsuccessful. This time round, they managed to get the job done and in spectacular fashion.

In the previous 4 years, Makerere had not scored 70+ points in a game but they have managed to do it twice in 6 games so far this season.

It is also very had to remember the last time they registered a 40-point game. This could be as far back as 2018 or even more.

On Easter Monday, 8th April, the Sparks kept their winning streak alive with their sixth win of the season after a dominant performance.

After the first quarter, they led the game 16-5 with Mercy Ageno scoring 8 points. Makerere the peeled away in the second quarter after edging Amazon 22-12 to lead 38-17 at halftime.

In the third, the Sparks delivered the final blow. They caught Amazon on fast break all quarter long and their opponents couldn’t keep up. They made an 18-0 run to take a 39-point lead and at this point, the game was as good as done.

Afua Nabawanga led the scoring with 21 points on 9/13, 69% FG. Mary Sora Deng registered her first double-dounle of the season, 11 points, 14 rebounds, and 5 steals.

Mercy Ageno put up another big performance and she finished with 13 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 assists.  Estaphania Oyella and Faridah Nakyanzi all had 10 points and combined for 8 steals.

Facts

For the first time in a long time, Makerere Sparks registered a 40-point victory. This was the first time since 2018 where they score 70+ points in multiple games in the season. Also, it was the first time in long time that they had 5 different players score 10+ points in the same game.

Coming into Monday’s game, the Sparks had defeated the JT Junior Lady Jaguars 49-39 on Saturday. This was a tough game for Sparks and they trailed at the end of the third quarter. However, they managed to force a couple of turnovers in the fourth and scored in transition to secure the victory.

Afua Nabawanga scored a game-high 16 points. Mary Deng registered 12 rebounds plus 8 points while Mercy Ageno had 10 rebounds, points plus 4 assists.

At the moment, Makerere Sparks is the team to beat and the biggest question is, can they earn promotion to the NBL?

They face the St Cyprian Kyabakadde and MUBS Lady Jills in their next two games.
