The Uganda 3×3 Women’s team made history as they qualified for the semifinals in their debut at their commonwealth games debut in Glasgow. Uganda defeated Tonga 21-12 in the semifinal playoff that was played on Tuesday 28th at the Scottish Event Campus (SEC).

Uganda came into this game having finished second in pool A with 4 wins out of the 5 games played, their only defeat coming againstAustralia. On the other side, Tonga had finished third in pool B with 3 wins and 2 losses.

Both teams were evenly matched and a lot was at stake. This set the table for a dicey game and in many ways, it delivered.

Uganda started the game strong with their offense firing. About 3 minutes into the game, they led the game 9-3 and were in firm control.

The Gazells kept the pressure and soon amassed a 10-point lead. At this point, it was a matter of when they would win the game as they had Tonga by the neck. To make matters worse for Tonga, they only had 3 players and Uganda made sure to use that to their advantage. They applied a lot of pressure on them defensively and Tonga could not find any way through.

Statistics

Jane Asinde once again delivered on the offensive end and she finished with 10 points and 6 rebounds. Melissa Akullu registered 6 points and 5 rebounds while Jamila Nansikombi scored 4 points including the game winner.

Semifinals Ahead

Uganda will face New Zealand in the semifinals and the game will take place on Wednesday. New Zealand is still unbeaten and it will be an uphill task for the Gazelles. However, we have seen that they can fight and one thing is for sure; they will bring the fight. Uganda will be looking to make more history if secure a medal in their debut.
