The Uganda 3×3 women have continued to make history at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow after advancing to the finals.
Uganda defeated New Zealand 21-9 in the semi-finals to book their spot in the finals on their commonwealth games debut.
This is a very big milestone for Uganda and it will forever be ingrained in the Uganda basketball and Commonwealth games history.
Uganda cane into the semi-finals having defeated Tonga 21-12 in the semifinal playoff.
Prior to that, they had finished with a 4-1 record in the group stages; their only loss coming against Australia.
As a result, they finished as the number 2 seed and had to face Tonga in the semifinal playoff.
They then faced New Zealand who had been unbeaten thus far and it was expected to be a very tough game.
However, Uganda’s defense was on alert and they managed to keep New Zealand at bay.
The Gazelles limited New Zealand to shots outside the perimeter from which they were unsuccessful. New Zealand attempted 14 2-point shots and made just 1.
On the flip side, Uganda was very efficient from both inside and outside. They made 3 of their 4 attempted 2-point shots and 12 of their 20 1-point attempts.
This efficiency and the defense helped Uganda immensely and they sawy out thr game with ease.
Statistics
Jane Asinde made 8 points and 6 rebounds while Melissa Akullu had 8 points and 4 rebounds. Perus Nyamwenge and Jamila Nansinkombi combined for the remaining 5 points.
Finals
Uganda will face Australia in the finals. The 2 teams met in the group stage and Australia secured a 21-9 victory.
Uganda has already made history but they will want to make more and become the first African teamto win the 3×3 Commonwealth games.
Game will be played at 22:00 pm EAT at the Scottish Events Center.
