The Uganda U23 3×3 Women’s team missed out on an opportunity to make history as they failed to advance to the quarterfinals. The team finished in eleventh place out of the 20 teams in the tournament.

Tournament Results

Uganda won 2 of their 4 group games. In their opening game, they defeated Madagascar 14-7. They secured a 15-6 victory against Tonga in their second game of the tournament. Those were the results on day one and at this point, all Uganda needed was a win against Latvia in order to advance to the quarterfinals.

On their second game day, Uganda opened with a 10-19 loss to Spain. However, they still had a chance to advance and all they had to do was get a win against Latvia in their final game. That proved not to be the case as Latvia handed them a 21-8 beating to extinguish their quarterfinal hopes.

Individual performances

Sylvia Nantongo was brought in to replace Martina Anyango and she performed well. She was Uganda’s best performer and led them in scoring with 19 points (4.8 per game). Nantongo also picked the second most rebounds in the group stage. She had 33 rebounds and the only person better was Canada’s Hailey Eleanor Franco DeRyck who had 37. In shooting efficiency, she was also number one. Nantongo had 49% and she was the only Uganda player with a percentage above 40.

Mary Priscillar Nambogo scored the second most points for Uganda. She had a total of 11 points, 2.8 per game. Sylvia Nakituuka registered 10 points, 2.5 per game. She also registered 3.3 rebounds per game. Shillah Lamunu scored just 7 points, 1.8 per game and 3.5 rebounds per game. It is important to note that she did not score any 2-point shot despite making 11 attempts. Despite that, she made 46% of her 1-point shot attempts and that was the most of Uganda.

Missed opportunity

After a perfect 2-0 start, Uganda was in prime position to make history. However, that did not happen. As thus, they finished in eleventh place. The team could have had a chance to finish higher but their low scores made them finish where they finished.

Race to the Olympics

Had Uganda made it to the quarterfinals, they would have collected very many points and closed the gap between them and Egypt. However, they missed out on the opportunity and Egypt finished higher than them (9th). To make matter worse, Egypt scored way more than Uganda and that only increase the gap between them and Uganda.
