New look Uganda Christian University and St. Lawrence University played to a 1-1 draw to open up the 2024/2025 University Football League season in Mukono on Tuesday.

The hosts who were also runners up in last season’s competition had 6 new starters from the final and it told as they failed to get a grip on the game for large stretches.

Harry Abiti scored the first goal of the season with a sublime free kick in the 30th minute before it was canceled by Ziraba Ronnie three minutes later.

Chances were few and in between for both sides as they tried to out-muscle each other in the midfield ultimately ending in a stalemate.

UCU head coach, Jimmy Kintu speaking after game said that the team will take the draw as a fair result but hope to get their chemistry right in the next games.

“We had many players make their debut for the team, and they were a little bit timid to express themselves, but that will come eventually with more minutes after the game”, he said.

Both sides will be expected to make it out of Group C as Kabale University and YMCA will also play their first games at a date to be later announced.
