The FUBA Division One playoffs tipped off and there were a lot of mixed results on day one of the quarterfinals. The number one and two seeds won their games but the number three and four seeds lost.

Kampala University opened the day with a thumping 73-42 win over the lady Icons. In the first half, both teams went toe-to-toe but the University side led the game 38-29. In the second, they completely took over. They outscored the Lady Icons 35-13 to secure a dominant 31-point victory.

All of Kampala University players, except Racheal Hikma scored at least 2 points. Tasha Goi led them in scoring with 11 points while Victoria Nalwanga had 10. Sarah Nalumansi scored 10 points and she was the only Lady Icons’ player in double digits.

Makerere Sparks defeated St Cyprian 57-52 in a very tense game. The last time these 2 side had met, the high school side had secured a 3-point victory after coming back from down 14. This time though, they never had the services of Auma Angela and Grace Zawedde. Nonetheless, they put up a fight and pushed Makerere to the edge.

The game was tied at 14 points after the first quarter. In the second, Makerere managed to gain an 8-point lead. The high school side managed to overcome the Sparks in the third as they scored 16 compared to Makerere’s 12. Most of their points came from the free throw line.

At the start of the fourth, St Cyprian took the lead after Christine Nakasujja hit a huge triple. However, their offense went into slumber mode. To make matter worse, they were in foul trouble and this affected them. Makerere made a 10-0 run to take an 8-point lead with 2 minutes to play. At this point, St Cyprian had given up and Makerere won it 57-52.

Nassali Margaret and Afuwa Nabawanga each scored 10 points for Makerere. Christine Nakasujja led the scoring in the game with 12 points while Vivian Nakyanzi and Resty Nakibuuka each had 9 points. Mamer Susan Adong dominated the glass and she had 25 rebounds and 6 blocks.

Seeta High shocked number three Nkumba Lady Marines with a 72-61 victory. In this game, Nkumba led by as many as 9 points but the high school side managed to complete a comeback and win by 11 points.

Nkumba started strong offensively and by the halftime break, they had scored 41 points while Seeta had 34. The third quarter changed everything. Seeta opened with a 10-0 run to take the lead. Nkumba scored just 6 points in the entire third quarter while Seeta scored 19 to take a 6-point. Seeta extended their lead to 12 points with 4 minutes to play and a comeback was almost impossible.

Bilha Akinyi nearly made a triple double as she finished with 20 points, 9 rebounds, 9 assists and 6 steals. Christine Namyalo had 18 points while Kristine Stephanie had 17 points, 14 rebounds and 4 assists.  Achomo Lucky has 11 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists plus 3 steals.

Nkumba had 4 players in double digits, Mellisa Kyazzae Namboowa registered a 14 points, 11 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals double-double. Joseph Manuela had 18 points while Melinda Laker and Precious Apio scored 15 and 10 points respectively.

MUBS Lady Jills registered a hugs 53-41 victory over the JT Junior Lady Jaguars. When these 2 sides met during the regular season, the Junior Lady Jaguars won both encounters by a tiny margin. This was a much needed win for the Lady Jills.

Lady Jills completely dominated the first quarter. They limited JT to just 2 points while scoring 16. When the Kira side woke up in the second, they tried to put some scores on the put and limit MUBS defensively. Lady Jills scored just 6 points in the second quarter but they led the game 22-15 at the halftime break.

In the final minutes to the third quarter, JT Juniors scored just 1 points while Lady Jills scored 8 to extend their lead to 11 points. The Juniors Jaguars scored 6 quick points to start the final period. They cut the deficit to 5 points but Lady Jills made an 11-2 run to extend their lead to 14 points. They managed to maintain and won the game 53-42.

Grace Bangirana and Caroline Akol each had 13 points for the Lady Jills while Racheal Among added 10 points. Maria Bikufa was the only JT junior player in double digits and she had 10 points.

Game Ones of the quarterfinals delivered and more will be expected in game two. Game Twos shall be played on Sunday 20th at the Hamz Stadium in Nakuivubo.
