Makerere University kicked off the 2024 University Football League on a positive note after defeating Victoria University 1-0 at the Makerere Main Sports Ground on Thursday 19th September.
The solo goal of the game was scored by Frank Mutekenga who made a perfectly placed header from a Waswa Herbert cross on the free kick in the 18th minute.
Victoria University had started off well as they got 2 big chances but the Makerere’s goalkeeper Wejuli Joel managed to deny Reagan Mugerwa from close range and keep out Israel Awada’s free kick early in the game.
Makerere also got early chances of their own but Osuna Cosmos couldn’t beat the goalkeeper John Micahel Akulepi who also kept out Ssekimmbegge Kevin’s free kick a few minutes later.
Makerere dominated the remainder of the game as they created several chances but they were unable to find the back of the net.
The head coach Kasozi William was very happy with the victory in the opener,
“I’m very happy with the win, I’m proud of the boys and we got 3 points which is very important in the first game” he said.
He also commented on the strong defense that the Mak Enzymes displayed throughout the game.
“The first game is always tricky but we managed to defend well. We did a lot in our training sessions, our defense is perfectly well and I believe it is very hard for us to concede a goal”
Samuel Ekong had a fantastic game, controlling the midfield and creating opportunities for the forwards, his coach had very heartwarming words for him.
“He’s a brilliant footballer, I give him all the trust that’s why he had to display good football”
About areas of improvement, he had a few concerns with the finishing.
“Today we missed a lot of opportunities, we need to polish that, work on our finishing so that we can score big goal margins”
The Captain Mudhasi Ian commented about the impact that the fresh faces will bring to the team.
“I believe in the team and since we have new entrants, we know we are going to make it because they bring something new to the team”
Makerere University take on Ndejje University in their next fixture.
