Nkumba Lady Marines extended their winning streak to 7 after defeating Angels 65:51 on Wednesday 16th at YMCA.

This was the first loss of the Angels in the second round and despite putting up a spirited fight, Nkumba was too strong for them.

Nkumba led from the get-go but Angels was always close and the first quarter ended 16-13.

Angels turned things around at the start of the second after Oluka Martha buried a couple of shots to start the second.

For the remainder of the quarter, it was a back-and-forth with the game being tied on 3 separate occasions and 2 lead changes.

As halftime approached, Nkumba led 30-27, but both teams were fighting hard, and each had their moments.

Angels started the second half strong as they made a 6-0 run to take the lead but Nkumba switched up a couple of things and they never looked back.

The Lady Marines made a 10-0 run, but this was mainly due to their defense.

They applied a press against Angels who made 6 turnovers and Nkumba capitalized with 8 of their 10 points from turnovers.

At the end of the third period, the Lady Marines were still in the lead 45-38 but Angels were well within touching distance.

Angels made it a 2-point game start the fourth quarter and managed to stay close until Nkumba made a 6:0 run to make it an 11-point game.

Despite a couple of baskets later in the fourth quarter, Nkumba had developed a significant lead and they sealed a 65-51 victory.

Talking points

Angels Big men were not effective and this affected them a lot compared to the how effective Privas of Nkumba was.

Angel Akuwei recently made her debut but she hasn’t adjusted yet while Lina Kuol is yet to be a dominant force.

Veteran Komugisha Ritah and Grace Mudiba had to step up a lot, which they did, but a little more help from the big bodies and maybe the result could have been different.

Likicho Martha has been the top scorer for Angels since her return, averaging 20+ points and a couple of 3-point shots per game.

Angels created for her shots but she was unable to score from behind the arc.

On the contrary, Martha Oluka was able to score 2 of her 6 attempts and maybe she should have been given more time on the court.

Nkumba has been on a run and it’s very hard to see who will stop them. They have shooters, scorers, length and a couple of other things which most teams don’t have.
