Paul ‘MacGyver’ Odong produced one of the greatest individual performances in Uganda National Basketball League history, scoring a personal and team high 53 points to lead the Namuwongo Blazers to a dominant 110-64 victory over Kampala Rockets at ABJA Park, Naalya.
Odong, who played the entire game, knocked down 15 3-pointers to set a new NBL 3-point shooting record having broken Albert Aciko’s 11 triples in a game. He added 14 rebounds to complete an outstanding double-double, his first this season.
Coming into the game, the Kampala Rockets had already been relegated and there was not much to fight for. However, for the Blazers, they haven’t secured the number one seed yet and this was a must win for them if they wanted to finish the regular season at the top.
Kampala Rockets started the game brightly and kept pace with the defending champions in the opening quarter, trailing by just one point at 24-23. However, Odong caught fire in the second quarter, hitting four triples as the Blazers stretched their advantage to 55-38 at halftime.
The Blazers maintained their momentum after the break, pushing the tempo and extending their lead to 31 points heading into the final quarter. MacGyver hit another 4 3-pointers in the quarter and he extended his points tally to 31 points.

Going into the fourth, one thing was on the Blazer’s minds, to create for their Captain. He scored 22 points in the fourth quarter with 18 coming from the 3-point line. This marked one of the most impressive individual performances in recent history and the 3-point record may stand for a number of years.
