The 2025 FIBA Women’s Afrobasket Basketball, to be held in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire is 3 months away and so many countries and players are already psyched for the tournament.
The draw to determine the group was held on Wednesday 23rd at Hotel des Armees in Abidjan and Uganda was pitted against familiar opponents.
The Gazelles were pitted in Group C alongside Western African countries, Senegal and Guinea.
This news was received with mixed reactions in Uganda but there is a reason to be confident in the girls.
During the 2023 Women’s Afrobasket in Rwanda, the Gazelles faced these opponents and came out on top on both occasions.
In a historic game, Uganda defeated Senegal 85-83, and that result sent shock waves in the Africa Women’s Basketball.
In the 7-8 playoffs, the Gazelles thumped Guinea 85-44 to secure a 7th place finish.
Having defeated these opponents last time around, the team, coaches, and fans should be very confident that the team will take care of business.
Another reason to be confident is the extraordinary performance at the Qualifiers.
The Gazelles did very well, going to Egypt and defeating the hosts not once but twice to secure their ticket to the continental championship.
The other reason why the Gazelles should be confident is because of the format of the tournament.
The winners of each group automatically qualify for the quarter-finals while the second and third placed teams in each group will play a qualifying series for the quarter-finals with the winners advancing to the last eight.
This means that even if the Gazelles don’t win the group, they will still have another chance and given how the strong the team is expected to be, compared to other teams, then they should be good enough to prevail and qualify for the final 8.
As things stand, we don’t know which players will be selected but if fit, we expect the Captain Jane Asinde and assistant Hope Akello to lead the charges.
The biennial Women’s AfroBasket will take place at the Palais des Sports de Treichville in Abidjan from July 26 to August 3.
