The 2025 FUBA Division One season started on Saturday 3rd May at Hamz Stadium and there were four University derbies on the opening weekend.
Makerere Sparks and MUBS-affiliated Lady Jills played in the first University derby on Saturday.
This was the first game of Lady Jills in more than 15 months, having withdrawn from the 2024 season.
Makerere Sparks, who finished in the quarter-finals last season aimed to start on a positive note and this was the perfect opportunity for them.
They managed to win the game 63-39, marking their biggest win in a long time.

The Sparks had 3 players in double digits; Afuwa Nabawanga (14), Mercy Ageno (13) and Belindah Nakiryowa (14).
On the other hand, Lady Jills had 3 players tied on 7 points: Alice Nalubulwa, Caroline Aber, and Gertrude Ajidiru.
2024 second runners up UMU Flames was also in action against newly promoted YMCA Hamstars.
The Hamstars led the first quarter 25-19 but UMU outscored them 36-26 in the next 2 quarters and with the fourth quarter ending in a tie, UMU got the win.
Joshua Duallo (18 pts, 12 reb) and Ernest Nasasira (13 pts, 10 reb) both registered a double-double while John Otuko added 13 points and 8 rebounds for UMU Flames.
YMCA Hamstars had 3 players in double-digits: Ben Shirack (11 pts), Andrew Kirabo (16 pts) and Dishon Mutola (11 pts).
On Sunday, there were 2 University derbies, both for the ladies.
Makerere Sparks fell to the Victoria She Crocs 62-52 in a hotly contested game.
Generous Grant was the biggest contributor as she played 50 minutes, and registered a big double-double.

She finished with 27 points, 15 rebounds, 2 assists and 4 steals.
Naluyima Bisoboka registered 10 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 6 steals.
Former Sparks’ center Viola Nakazibwe came up big on the boards with 18 rebounds, 6 points.
Mercy Ageno registered a double-double for Makerere Sparks with 11 points, 14 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals.
Faridah Nakyanzi was the other player in double-digits with 12 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists.
The final University derby was between Kampala University and Lady Jills.
This was a game of 2 halves and each time took one.
Kampala University led the game 39-19 after the first half but things turned around in the second.
They only managed to scored 11 points in the second half while Lady Jills scored 28.
However, Kampala University managed to hold on to win the game 50:47.
Nalwanga Victoria led the scorers with 9 points while Alimo Josephine, Ayaa Gloria and Alice Nalubulwa each scored 8.

Abuk Angelo was the only player yo register double digits and she finished with 11 rebounds.
