The National Men’s Hockey League witnessed an action-packed Saturday on the 23rd of September at the National Hockey Grounds. The standout fixture of the day featured Makerere Hockey Club, who clinched a thrilling 4-2 victory over the Titans, reshuffling the league standings in dramatic fashion.
As the dust settled, Makerere soared to sixth place. Meanwhile, the Titans found themselves languishing at the bottom of the table, with only four points from their 14 games played. In another gripping encounter, Thunders managed to snatch a 2-2 draw against KHC Originals, adding a crucial point to their tally.
The match between Makerere Stingers and Weatherhead Titans was nothing short of a rollercoaster ride for hockey enthusiasts. It kicked off with a bang as Henry Mugisa, from the University based side, showcased his prowess by slotting home a sublime goal just two minutes into the game from a penalty corner.
The youthful Makerere side continued to exert immense pressure on the Titans, and their efforts were rewarded when Mathias doubled their lead merely five minutes later. The end of the first quarter saw Makerere basking in a 2-0 lead, leaving spectators anticipating a landslide victory.
However, the Titans had other ideas. They swiftly retaliated with two quick goals courtesy of Nicodemus and Kasasa Vincent, leveling the playing field at 2-2. Makerere wasn’t about to let their lead slip away so easily. Timothy Hamya struck with precision to regain the advantage, closing the half with a 3-2 lead in favor of Makerere.
The third quarter, perhaps due to the scorching afternoon sun, witnessed a more cautious approach from both sides, as they seemed fatigued and hesitant to attack. Despite this, Makerere managed to extend their lead to 4-2 with a well-placed shot from Mathias in the 36th minute, securing a well-deserved victory.

In the clash between KHC Originals and Thunders, the former displayed resilience by coming back from a 2-0 deficit to secure a 2-2 draw. Savious Kalema’s early goals gave KHC the lead, but they faced stiff competition from Thunders. Thunders’ spirited comeback earned them a valuable point.

In the ladies’ only fixture of the weekend, the Makerere Eagles and Wananchi HDF battled to a goalless stalemate. The Eagles, who began the game with only ten players, were expected to struggle against HDF. However, their staunch defense held firm throughout the game, securing a draw against their opponents.
With the point earned from this draw, the Eagles found themselves level on points with last year’s league champions, Deliverance Church, both boasting 11 points.
