The FISU University 3×3 World Cup started on Friday 15th in Brasília District, Brazil.
The UCU Women, who were in action for their group games on Saturday 16th, made history.
They won their opening game, 19-11 against University of Seville.
In this game, they dominated from the get-go and it was surprising that they did not reach the 21 point mark.
Despite having a tough contest, the UCU ladies also won their second game, 17-15, against University of Chile.
With about a minute left in the game, it was tied 13 points a piece.
Sylivia Nantongo was sent to the charity line and had a chance to give UCU a 2-point lead.
However, she made the first and missed the second.
In that same moment, a technical foul was charged to UCU and University of Chile tied the game from the free throw line.
On their next possession, they made the layup and took a 1-point lead with under 50 seconds to go.
The game was not done yet as Shillah Lamunu banked a 2-point shot to give UCU the lead shortly after.
UCU managed to get a defensive stop on the next possession and saw out the game.
Tracy Namugosa led the team in scoring with 7 points.
Shillah Lamunu had 6, all coming from the 2-point line while Nantongo and Anyango each had 2.
With this, they have advanced to the quarter-finals and will face another Spanish side, University of Valencia.
History
This is the first time that UCU (women) have made it to the quarter-finals.
It is also the first time that they have won 2 games at the tournament.
Clearly, the experience attained at the various international 3×3 tournaments has come in handy.
Who knows, they could make more history and become the first African team to win the tournament.
On the men’s side, things did not go very well.
They lost both their pool games. 17-15 against Huaqiao University from China in their opener and 19-15 to University of Puerto Rico.
In the playoff game against University of Melbourne, they lost 16-12.
