Sommet got revenge against the City Oilers, defeating them 90-87, in a game that was decided in the final 5 seconds of overtime.
This was undoubtedly the most exciting game of the season as both teams competed ferociously and got the crowd on the edge of their seats.
When these teams met in round one, the City Oilers won the game 83-69 but one thing was evident.
Sommet played so much better and forced the Oilers into 10 turnovers in the fourth quarter.
However, it was a little too late and this time around, Sommet started on the front foot.
They were very efficient both offensively and defensively in the first quarter.
Sommet scored 29 points, with 13 made field goals from 22 attempts.
Nyembo Fataki had 12 first quarter points while scoring 5 of his 7 field goal attempts.
Peter Cheng contributed massively with 9 points in the quarter.
Sommet played aggressively on defense and forced the Oilers into 6 turnovers.
Sommet’s offense greatly trailed off in the second quarter but one man, Kasereka Tembo, kept them alive.
He scored 3 3-point shots but they came at crucial times when City Oilers had gathered momentum.
Joseph Chuma and Mer Maker also carried the City Oilers offense as they scored 16 of the Oilers 21 points.
Allawi Ssenkubuge was also fouled as the clock was expiring and he made all 3 free throws to make it 44-39, at halftime, Sommet in the lead.
The Oilers took a 4-point lead after making a 9-0 run to start the third quarter.
However, Tembo and Cheng made back-to-back triples to hand the lead back to Sommet.
In a 2 minute spell, the Kansanga based side made an 11-0 run to take a 9-point lead, giving them a slightly comfortable cushion.
With less than 4 minutes left in the fourth quarter, Sommet led the game 73-67 but they lost grip off the game.
City Oilers made an 8-0 run to take a 3-point lead but in that time, Sommet made 4 turnovers which helped the Oilers a lot.
Just when we thought the Oilers had the game, Fayed makes an unnecessary foul on Nyembo who made the basket and one.
He made the free throw to tie the game but shortly after that, Joseph Chuma gave Oilers the lead once again.
However, the game was not done yet, and Nyembo was fouled and he made both free throws to tie the game with 47 seconds left.
After a timeout, Fayed Baale went iso while trying to run the clock. He managed to get off the shot but was unsuccessful and Sommet had just above 15 seconds left on the game clock.
Check found Fataki for a corner 3 but he missed. However Sommet secured the offensive rebound and Tembo was unable to deliver th3 dagger.
With 12 seconds left in overtime, the City Oilers were trailing by 1 and Ben Komakech made turnover (back court).
This was a very huge relief for Sommet as all they had to do was see out the game.
The Oilers were able to get a quick foul and Fataki scored just 1 of the 2 free throws.
However, he fouled shortly after that and sent Edgar Munaba to the line with 4 seconds left.
From the fourth, Edgar had made 10 of his 13 free throws and all he had to do was make both.
Unfortunately, he missed the first and made a violation on the second.
Sommet then secured a 90-87 victory, perhaps their biggest ever win, giving come against the defending champions.
This game had 2 huge calls that so many did not agree with and could have cost a team the game.
The referee had no business calling an unsportsmanlike foul against Tembo.
This looked like a crammed call by the referee and that call showed his lack of game management as a referee at that point in the game.
The other huge call was the back court violation by Ben Komakech.
Even on second glance, there is a debate on whether it was a violation or not.
Some argue that Ben Komakech was also fouled in the process and should have gone to the line.
Did these calls determine the eventual outcome? Yes, to a degree.
