Ugandan sports and mathematics have always moved in tandem and this time around, it was no different for the Silverbacks during the Qualifiers for the Afrobasket.
In the first window, Uganda had a 1/2 record, their win coming against Nigeria and their mission was to earn qualification.
However, it was not going to be an easy task as a lot was at stake for all the teams and this was arguably the most competitive group.

Uganda won the first game against Cape Verde 63-60 and this put them in a very good spot.
However, Nigeria also won their game against Libya 75-70 and this meant that for Uganda to qualify, they had to win against Nigeria or lose with less than 10 points.
Things didn’t go that way the following day as Nigeria destroyed Uganda in the fourth quarter 32-8, to win the game 87-67.
This result meant that Uganda had to win against Libya in their final if they were to have a chance of qualifying but that was not necessary given the results from other groups.
The top 3 teams in the 5 groups earn an automatic qualification while the best 4th placed team also gets to qualify.
Ahead of the game, all the other groups had decided their positions and Uganda was the best 4th place team.
Gabon and Morocco had 0 wins, while Kenya and Central African Republic had 1 each, which meant that Uganda would go through with their 2 wins.
Despite knowing this before the game, Uganda had a very good outing against Libya though it did not materialize into a victory.
They lost 69-66, John Deng Geu finishing with 25 points and 8 rebounds.
The Silverbacks shall play at the Afrobasket for the fourth consecutive time, and they shall be looking to finish higher than 6th where they were last time around.
