The weekend of field hockey in Uganda was packed with thrilling matches that showcased talent and resilience of various teams. Notably,KHC Stallions, Weatherhead Men, City Lions, Rockets, and SC Wananchi men emerged victorious in their respective games. However, it was also a solemn weekend as the hockey fraternity mourned the passing of the legendary player and coach, Innocent Mbabali.
On Saturday, KHC Stallions secured a resounding 10-0 victory against KHC Originals. Aaron Mutenyo’s outstanding performance, with five goals, contributed significantly to the Stallions’ success. Emmanuel Ssempebwa scored twice, while Pike Atuhaire, Ernest Musumba, and Alfred Agaba each added a goal to seal the comprehensive win.
In another commanding display, Weatherhead triumphed over Makerere with a commanding scoreline of 10-2. Thomas Opio and Colline Batusa scored three and two goals respectively, with Timothy Ntumba,Brian Okodi,Maxwell Mugisa, and captain Moses Tushabe adding one goal each. The absence of Makerere’s goalkeeper and senior player Brian Bayuule certainly contributed to the high scoreline, allowing Weatherhead to maintain their position at the top of the table.
Thunders faced off against City Lions in an intense match that ended with a 3-2 victory for the latter. Goals from Mandela, Malik, and Bashar secured the win for City Lions, while Muhammed Babu and Kajjubi found the back of the net for Thunders, yet fell short of victory.
On Sunday in the early kick-off game, Rockets staged an impressive comeback to defeat Badgers 2-1. Okethayot and Opoya Elvis scored in the 51st and 52nd minutes respectively, overturning an early lead from Badgers’ Sula Bwabye.
Meanwhile, Wananchi dominated their match against Weatherhead Titans, emerging as clear winners with an impressive 5-0 scoreline. Jordan Achaye contributed a brace, while Baguma, Shafiq, and Innocent Tumukunde each added a goal, demonstrating Wananchi’s offensive prowess.

In a rather unexpected turn of events, Makerere ladies received a walkover victory as their opponents, Deliverance Church, failed to show up for the match.

However, amidst the excitement of the matches, the Uganda hockey community was plunged into sadness with the passing of Innocent Mbabali. Mbabali, who had an illustrious playing career primarily with Wananchi, left an indelible mark on the sport. Throughout the weekend, moments of silence were observed, and different gestures of remembrance were made to honor the prolific player and coach. The entire Ugandan hockey fraternity mourns the loss of this prominent figure, whose legacy will be cherished for years to come.
