Busoga College Mwiri in Jinja recently hosted an exhilarating edition of the Independence Cup tournament, showcasing the remarkable talent and competitive spirit of the participating teams. The event featured both school and club categories, offering a thrilling display of field hockey prowess away from the Lugogo turf.
In the school girls’ fixtures, Kyadondo SS and Bukerere SS battled it out for the championship. Despite the game ending in a goalless draw, an intense shootout ensued, with Kyadondo emerging as the victors in a nerve-wracking 3-2 victory.
Meanwhile, in the school boys’ fixtures, the competition was fierce among six teams: Kyadondo SS, Bukerere SS, Namilyango A, Namilyango B, Mwiri A, and Mwiri B. The teams were divided into two groups, A and B. Kyadondo SS finished on top in group B, while Namilyango A secured the top position in group A. The final match between Kyadondo SS and Namilyango A ended in a goalless draw, leading to yet another thrilling penalty shootout. Ultimately, Kyadondo SS emerged triumphant, securing the title.
The clubs category witnessed two ladies teams, Wananchi SC and KHC Swans, and five men’s teams, namely Wananchi SC,KHC Stallions, KHC Originals, Rockets, and HC Badgers. In the ladies’ category, Wananchi SC and Kampala, along with the two school girls’ teams, Kyadondo SS and Bukerere SS, competed in a round-robin format. After an impressive performance throughout the tournament, KHC Swans topped the group with seven points, while Wananchi secured second place with five points. In the highly anticipated ladies’ final, Wananchi SC showcased their resilience by playing out a goalless draw with KHC Swans who missed the services of Lucky Akello. In the subsequent penalty shootout, Wananchi SC emerged victorious, successfully defending their Independence Cup title.
On the men’s side, HC Badgers proved to be the dark horse of this year’s event, making their mark with a win against KHC Stallions thanks to an exceptional goal by Harold Ntale. They followed this with a draw against Rockets, a comprehensive 4-0 victory against KHC Originals, and a loss to Wananchi, finishing with seven points in second place. Wananchi dominated the round-robin tie, topping the table with an impressive 12 points. This set the stage for an exciting final match between Wananchi and HC Badgers.
The grand finale of the men’s category was a thrilling and fiercely contested match. Both teams displayed remarkable skill and determination, creating an end-to-end spectacle. In the end, Wananchi emerged as victors, securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory, successfully defending their Independence Cup title.
