Bugema University is a chartered Seventh Day Adventist institution located in the Central region of Uganda, 16 km from Gayaza along the Gayaza-Zirobwe highway.

In its existence it has had a number of prominent sports personalities with the most notable being the long distance runners like Cheptegei.

It’s basketball program has been growing in leaps and bounds since the introduction of

Kasingabalya Jerome as their head coach and the team of the experienced assistants Henry Malinga and Okello Francis.

In his first year, Jerome’s charges managed to beat Powerhouse UCU but fell to Ndejje University in overtime at the semifinals of the 2022 FEAUS Games held in December 2022 at Ndejje University. They however managed to secure a third place finish.

They then went on to win the inaugural East African University Basketball championship in 2023 with the men taking Gold after defeating Kenya’s USIU and the ladies taking Silver after losing to the same opponent in the finals.

At the2023 AUUS games, Nkumba (men) once again lost to Ndejje University at the semifinals but managed to secure bronze after defeating Nkumba University in the Bronze Medal game.

During this period, a plethora of athletes have graduated from the university’s basketball program and have gone on to become good citizens and even better players.

Some of the notable players still in the program include Malual Dier (City Oilers), Choul Nyout (Nam Blazers), Rout Tut (D-Mark Power), Namuli Hanifah (Miracle Ravens), Aisha Namakula (UPDF Lady Tomahawks) to mention but a few.

With an experienced coaching staff, the program is headed in the right direction and more is success is yet to be registered.

Their trials this year will first be held on the 28th June 2024 to select the final 15 men and 12 ladies who will be put in a week’s residential camp to make the final cut.

The Head Coach Kasingabalya Jerome  had this to say; “We are trying to build a team and players that not only compete on court but also in life, we value the academics of players, their social quotient and try to improve them. We could have head hunted talent but that would leave out the few good ones we weren’t able to spot. This way we try to level the field for recruitment”

Those that are recruited shall be given a scholarship to study at Bugema University.
