With the conclusion of the FIBA 3×3 Youth Nations League, the Uganda ladies qualified and will be representing Uganda the the FIBA U23 World Cup in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.

The tournament shall be happening from 11th-15th September and Uganda shall get to face the top most competition in the world.

However, this qualification of the U23 Ladies comes almost a year later since the qualification of the then U17 3×3 teams for the U18 World Cup.

Team Uganda that qualified for the World Cup

The U18 Boys and Girls World Cup shall be happening in Debrecen, Hajdú-Bihar, Hungary from 26th- 30th August.

The tournament comprises 40 teams, 20 for the Girls and 20 for the boys, and they are in pools of 5, and the top 2 teams will be advancing to the quarter-finals.

The girls are ranked 19th out of the 20 teams and they are in Pool C with Japan, India, China, and Kyrgyzstan.

They shall be playing Japan in their opening game and India later that day.

The Boys are ranked 20th and are in Pool D with France, Ukraine, Kyrgyzstan, and Sri Lanka.

They shall be playing Kyrgyzstan in their opener and Sri Lanka later on 27th August.

With the U18 African Championship happening around the same time as the U18 world cup, a lot of questions have been asked on who will be playing for the Uganda at that tournament.

Mathew Kisakye, Brighton Galiwango, Aaron Victor Makmot and Bono Mujuni are the four players who represented Uganda and earned qualification to the World. With the exception of Mujuni, the other 3 were part of the U18 team that won the Zone V Qualifiers.

Will they be going to the World Cup or the African Championship?

That answer is yet to be found.

For the ladies, Mia Belinda Alaba, Modesta Maxine Anyango, Angella Auma and Christine Namyalo were the ones that finished third and sent Uganda to the world Cup.

Those four were part of the core and are the most experienced players on the U18 team. Seeing them feature at the 3×3 may be very difficult as they are the one leading team Uganda at the African Championship.

With the preparation for the U18 African Championships also underway, the teams are yet to assemble but there has been some positive news coming out.

When asked about the possibility and likeness of a camp for the Girls and Boys given that most are at the East Africa Schools Games in Bukedea, the FUBA General Secretary Hudson Ssegamwenge had this to say.

“We shall be having a mini training camp for the U18 Girls in Bukedea”

He also shaded light on the camp for the Boys.

“All the foreign-based players are going to be Jetting in, and we shall have a one-week camp,” he added.

Seeing Uganda qualify for the World Cup is a very big thing and with 3 teams representing, the players shall get more exposure and also it helps to set a standard for the upcoming youngsters.
