The year 2026 is going to be another basketball filled year and there are a lot of activities to look put for.
In this article, we highlight some of the events that will be very key and shouldn’t be missed.
World Cup Qualifiers (Round One)
The men’s world cup window one will be exciting. This will be the first National team activity of the year. Uganda will face Angola on 26th, Mali on 27th February and Egypt on 1st March.
It is rumoured that the Federation (FUBA) is in talks with FIBA so that Uganda can be able to host these games.
If this happens, it will be the first time in a long time that the senior men’s National team is playing on home soil.
2026 NBL
Uganda’s premier basketball league is something to be excited about. There were a couple of rule changes and with the transfers happening, it is promising to be very entertaining.
The NBL is expected to run from February to July.
Division One and Two
The lower is also very interesting and offers a lot of action and talking points. Most of the top players who miss out on the NBL get to compete in the lower leagues and they bring a lot of vibrancy to the league.
Also, the fact that teams be battling to get promoted to the NBL means that stakes are high and platers/teams give their all.
Women’s day
In the last 2 years, the women’s day event has become one of those events that people enjoy. It takes away from the monotonous usual game days and we get to see another side of the sport.
The ladies get to be celebrated on their day ad everyone loves it.
FUBA Captains Forum
In April, a FUBA Captains Forum is set to happen. We don’t know what will take place on that event but having all the Captains meet is good and hopefully wonderful ideas can be shared.
U18 Afrobasket Qualifiers
In 2024, Uganda hosted this event and both the Boys and Girls became champions. This time around, the girls already qualified but may participate so as to get a feel of the competition and get the team to play together.
The boys will be looking to return their title and the squad that has been assembled so far is very decent. There is a lot of optimism in this team.
U18 Afrobasket
The girls finished 4th in the 2024 championship. This time around, the team will be on mission to make the finals and qualify for the U19 World Cup.
With the way the team is looking, there is every reason to be excited and look out for this event.
For the boys, if they qualify, they will be looking to put up a much better performance to what was displayed in 2024 in South Africa.
One important to note here is, word has it that FUBA is in talks with the Federation to host this event. If their bid is successful, the fans shall get a chance to see a youth Afrobasket event in Uganda.
FIBA 3X3 Women’s series
In 2025, Uganda participated in 3 of the 15 Women’s series stops. This time around, they are looking to play in many more as they collect points to help them secure qualification for LA28 Olympics.
From just 1 win in 6 games, Uganda will be looking to better their performance at this stage.
FIBA 3X3 Youth Nations League
The Youth Nations League is a very exciting event which goes on for a week. In 2024, Uganda managed to host that event with the ladies emerging overall champions while the gents finished in third place.
The ladies went on to win in 2025 and qualified for back-to-back world cups. This event will be very exciting because entire team that played in 2025 is still eligible and given their experience now, it may be an easy win for Uganda.
Remember that this event will heavily contribute to the points for the Olympics qualification and Uganda will be very ruthless.
The men have a chance to register some success at this level as things haven’t worked out for them in the recent past.
If Uganda qualify, they will get to play at the FIBA U23 3×3 World Cup which shall take place in September.
Commonwealth Games
The Uganda women’s 3×3 team qualified for the 2026 Commonwealth games in Glasgow. With the experience that the players have, they are expected to perform very well at this event.
Kira 8
The inaugural season of this tournament was in 2025. In 2026, it promises to be bigger and better.
FUBA Cup
On the Calendar, there is a FUBA Cup competitions that could be played in August and September. We are not very sure what this is exactly but more information shall be put out as the months go by.
3×3 Club Championship
There is also a 3×3 Club Championship that is scheduled for September. Whether it will happen or not and the format are yet to be determined.
USSSA Games
This is the biggest event in high school sports and this time around, the games shallbe held at Seroma Christian School.
Given their relationship with UCU, it is said that some games may be played at UCU which means very easy accessibility to the games.
Over 90 schools participate in this amd it is the perfect time to scout youngsters.
Secondary and Primary School Leagues
In 2026, these eagues are expected to be taken seriously.
3×3 Africa Cup
One of the premier 3×3 events in Africa is the 3×3 and it usually happens in December. Uganda has not done well recent past but with a lot of possible 3×3 activity during the year, perhaps a solid teams can be selected.
This event is also among those that given a lot of ranking points and in order to improve our chances at the 2028 Olympics, the teams have to perform very well.
Start of New NBL Season
The 2027 NBL season will potentially start in November and this will mark the start of a new NBL cycle. From that season, the league shall be played between October and May/June the following year.
